For those who want affordable luxury, it’s hard to look further than the 2019 Acura TLX and the 2018 Acura ILX, which are relatively new to the entry-level luxury market and are still fresh from mid-cycle facelifts. Both the TLX and ILX are currently Acura’s least expensive rides, with the former being a midsize sedan and the latter a compact sedan. Sporty, sizeable, and with a remarkable amount of premium features, either one is a good, reasonable purchase. Here are three major attributes that the 2019 TLX and 2018 ILX share.

Fuel Efficiency

Both vehicles are remarkable for their good fuel economy. On the TLX, you can opt for a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, which is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission for shifting faster, smoother, and with greater efficiency than conventional automatic gearboxes. Couple that with a front-wheel drivetrain, and expect fuel economy on the TLX to peak at 23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg* on the highway. Also worthy of mention is idle stop technology, which contributes to improved fuel efficiency by eliminating engine idling through automatic shutdown when coming to a stop and automatic restart when resuming driving. On the ILX, the aforementioned powertrain and drivetrain combination is standard: producing 25 mpg in the city and 35 mpg** on the highway.

Performance

On the other hand, if you want to maximize power on the 2019 Acura TLX—be it for acceleration or just pure performance thrill—you’d be better off with the 3.5-liter V6 that’s available. That engine produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. This is not to say, however, that the 2.4-liter I4 is a slouch; that engine delivers a very healthy 206 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque. And that’s not too far off from the 2018 Acura ILX’s lone engine, which produces 201 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque.

Styling

With either the TLX or ILX, you will enjoy aggressive, sporty profiles. Both vehicles have widened pentagonal front grills, sharp edges, and gleaming alloy wheels. Heated power windows with turn-signal indicators and a power moonroof with tilt, auto-open/close, and auto reverse capability are standard. And unique to both vehicles are the Jewel Eye® LED headlights, which comprise five low-profile LEDs per headlight for whiter, brighter, longer-lasting, and more energy-efficient illumination while enhancing the car’s overall aesthetic.
