As midsize crossovers that both debuted in the early 2000s, the Pilot and the MDX mirror each other, since they are both produced under the same parent company. The big difference, though, is that while the Pilot is from Honda, the MDX is manufactured by Honda’s luxury division, Acura. As a result, the MDX is a tad more handsomely equipped than its Honda cousin. Even in the 2019 model year, as the Pilot receives a major facelift, midway through its third production cycle, the MDX is still the better choice. More specifically, here’s why:

Performance

On the 2019 Acura MDX, you will enjoy a more robust powertrain than the 2019 Honda Pilot. Although both vehicles are powered by a 3.5-liter J-series V6 engine, you would get 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque on the Pilot. The MDX version produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, which is a 10-horsepower and 5 lb-ft of torque boost. Also, on the MDX, the engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission for a smooth ride and paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel for more gear-shifting convenience. You would need to upgrade to the upper-level Touring and Elite trims to get those components on the Pilot; otherwise you would be stuck with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Seating Accommodation

Although both the 2019 Acura MDX and the 2019 Honda Pilot provide three rows of seats, expect more standard-level seating accommodations on the MDX. All seats are covered with leather, and the front row consists of 12-way power-adjustable seats with power lumbar support, heating capability that can be used for colder months, and a sports-style design to keep occupants seated during the sharpest of turns and corners. On the Pilot, you would need to upgrade to the EX to get front-seat heating and 10-way power adjustability on the driver’s seat, and the EX-L to get leather seat covering and 4-way power adjustability extended to the front passenger seat.

High-Tech Features

Perhaps nothing on the vehicles illustrates the gulf between the 2019 Acura MDX as a luxury-branded ride and the 2019 Honda Pilot than their standard comfort and convenience features. Both midsize crossover start off with features such as cruise control, remote keyless entry, push-button engine start, Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, active sound control technology, and a USB port and audio jack for hooking up mobile devices. However, the MDX gets automatic dimming on its rearview mirror (which is frameless), eight speakers instead of seven, four USB charging-only ports instead of one, an upgrade to smart entry on its remote keyless system, and an 8-inch color display and an on-demand multi-use screen in place of the Pilot’s 5-inch color LCD screen. In addition, the MDX further distinguishes itself from its Honda cousin with features such as a garage-door opener, a single-disc CD player with MP3 and WMA playback compatibility, HD Radio technology, and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
